BULGARIA: A CLIMATE OF IMPUNITY
When even Frontex describes feeling “powerless” and “pressured into silence” by border guards, something has gone fundamentally wrong.
Frontex (despite its own contested record) has a mandate to monitor and support border management in line with EU law - this INCLUDES preventing and reporting these abuses.
People seeking asylum are subject to frequent violence, intimidation and illegal pushbacks, all at the hands of border authorities. They are sent back into danger without access to a fair and lawful asylum process.
When it witnesses violations and fails to intervene, Europe risks becoming not just ignorant, but willingly complicit.
Europe, this demands accountability, legality, and a return to the values we claim to stand for.
No border policy, no matter how it is framed, can ever justify the erosion of human rights.
