INSIDE BULGARIA’S DETENTION CENTRES 👇

“The premises were prison-like.”

We continued digging deeper into what is REALLY happening at the border and inside detention centres, often out of sight and inaccessible to human rights organisations...

The CPT’s ad hoc visit report (September 2024), alongside testimonies from asylum seekers, documents repeated accounts of mistreatment: physical brutality, uninhabitable living conditions and limited access to essential healthcare.

Let’s take a step back: these are individuals exercising their fundamental human right to seek asylum. They flee danger, arrive in search of protection, and are met with force, immediate arrest, and detention in dire conditions.

But these people are not prisoners ‼️ They are being criminalised for seeking safety, often held for months in conditions that delay or deny access to the asylum process.

Despite official “commitments” to improve the situation, the reality appears to be getting worse.

Surprise surprise, increasing border force is not the solution.

This is unacceptable. Humanitarian organisations must be granted access to these spaces.
