WHAT’S GOING ON IN : BULGARIA 👇

To better understand the criminalisation of humanitarian workers, we launched a new series exploring the systems behind criminalisation - the root conditions that make solidarity with asylum seekers necessary in the first place.

We started with Bulgaria, drawing on the research from European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE), Europe Must Act, and "The Bulgaria Way" publication from Félix Díaz.

We published five posts on what we discovered: from the systemic brutality and corruption of border authorities, to degrading 'reception' centres, to Europe turning a blind eye to first-hand testimonies, including those from FRONTEX officers themselves.

It's depressingly clear that Bulgaria's asylum system is one that seems designed to keeps people seeking refuge excluded from humanitarian protection, denied from asylum processes, and prevented from any real opportunity for integration...

...and all of this largely beyond meaningful scrutiny or accountability.

Alongside our research, we highlighted both recent and historical cases of people criminalised for standing with asylum seekers in Bulgaria. If you know of a case, please share it with us or submit it to our live database.
